A Memorial Service for Mrs. Jeanne Minter Dyer Coleman, 79, of Anniston, will be held Saturday, October 5, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Anniston with the Rev. Hal Noble officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 4, 2009 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs.
Mrs. Coleman died Thursday at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Danville, VA, Mrs. Coleman was a graduate of George Washington High School, where she excelled in oratorical and journalism competitions, and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she was president of Phi Mu sorority and a member of the field hockey team. Mrs. Coleman was a devoted teacher who served as head of the Anniston High School math department. She taught algebra, science and computer science during her career, which also included teaching at Johnston Junior High School, Anniston Academy and Jacksonville State University. She was a past president of the Anniston Bridge Club, where she enjoyed teaching “Easy Bridge” to beginners. She was also a certified duplicate bridge director. She was charter member of the Parnassus Study Club and a sustaining member of both the Maskers’ Ball and the Revelers’ Krewe. She was devoted to her family and friends. She especially loved music, spectator sports, and spending time at the beach. One of her greatest joys was celebrating the accomplishments of her students. Mrs. Coleman was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as president and a teacher of the Upper Room Sunday School class, a Trustee, member of the Board of Stewards, president of United Methodist Women, choir and hand bell choir member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen and Gus Dyer, and a brother, Gus W. Dyer, Jr., all of Danville, VA.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband, Tom G. Coleman Jr. of Anniston; a son, T. Gibson Coleman III of Anniston; two daughters, Jeanette Dyer Coleman Berryman, and husband, Steve, of Killen, and Dodie Coleman of Jacksonville; a sister, Ellen Dyer Davis, and husband, George, of Danville, VA; four grandchildren, Rob Berryman of Mobile, Tom Berryman of Killen, Cal Newman and Minter Coleman Newman, both of Jacksonville; a sister-in-law, Barbara B. Dyer of Danville, VA, and a brother-in-law, Curtin R. Coleman, and wife, Helga, of Earlysville, VA.
The family requests memorials are made to the Organ Fund or the General Fund of First United Methodist Church of Anniston, P.O. Box 1789, Anniston, Alabama, 36202.
In an effort to help others, Mrs. Coleman requested her body to be donated for medical research.
